On a vacation to Maui with friends in 2009 we were lucky enough to meet a local girl at the beginning of our trip who showed us all around the island. Shoots & Ladders is the most special place she showed us.
Not for the faint of heart, Shoots & Ladders is a daredevil hike down the side of the island around mile marker 34. After a short hike, and a decent down a small ladder, you must climb 150 ft. down a rope tied to a metal pole on the top of a cliff, and that’s only half way down. You still need to scale down another 150 ft. to reach the pools at the bottom. If it sounds scary, that’s because it is. The two people I went with didn’t go farther than that. Resolved to conquer this hike, I continued onto the pools at great personal risk.
On this day the waves were crashing all over the tide pools at the bottom of the cliffs. When I finally got down to the bottom it was indescribably exhilarating.
I had come to Maui on the heels of a personal tragedy, and swimming in the pools at the bottom of Shoots & Ladders gave me a certain kind of peace that I hadn’t found in a long time.
The shot below is a wider reference shot. If you observe the top of the frame, you can see the same colors contained in the photo above.
There is also a video I made documenting Shoots & Ladders.
